Welcome to Neighborhood House!

Hello everyone!

Thanks for visiting us at prepblog. Neighborhood House began in the 1890's as a community service site for primarily immigrant and working class families in the portland neighborhood. As times changed, many of the jobs on the river and in manufacturing migrated elsewhere, sending portland onto the shoals of hard economic times. Neighborhood House now aids area residents with food programs, daycare for working families, art programs, senior programs, and now, an afterschool tutoring program.

The Portland Reading Excellence Program (PREP) started in the fall of 2006 as a coordinated effort to improve the educational aspirations and performance of our younger members. Tutors generally visit one to four times per month and read and work math problems with several children per visit. Children arrive after school for the many services and shelter that Neighborhood House provides. We generally tutor from around 4:00pm until 6:30pm Monday through Thursday. We have a recurring information meeting for persons interested in learning more about PREP the first Monday of each month at Neighborhood House. Please join us if you want check us out in person.
