Do you have children's books and old textbooks filling your shelves or your basement?

We can give these learning resources a second life. Many older math texts may even be superior to the "New Math" books used today in many american schools. Bring them to us and give us a chance to introduce them into our afterschool programs including tutoring.

Help us find volunteer tutors :-) Poster and information sheets available!

Let us know if you can help us recruit new volunteer tutors by sending us an email expressing your desire to help to: nhky.tutoring@yahoo.com.

Help us get the word outby hanging
posters around town, at social or
entertainment venues, at your
workplace, or at your place of worship.

You can try to print out a copy of a tutor
information posters from the list linked
documents in the right column below
Preppy Readingfrog.

The links listed are to google-docs. If the
poster doesn't print out well, try resizing
your browser window either bigger or
smaller and printing again.

Alternatively, we can send you a pamphlet
as a word document via email that you can
print and post. Send us an email of where
you put up posters so we can keep track.
Click on the scans of the poster and
tear-off sheet for a closer look.

Thanks for your help. See you soon at
Neighborhood House.

Future additions to PREPBLOG!

The right hand column now has some new items below Preppy Readingfrog.

New items include:
  • a wish list of materials we need
  • links to videos about our tutoring program that will help both new and established tutors
  • a list of PREP documents that you can view and print out from home(this only works so so)
  • a calendar of days of the month that tutors have committed to work with the kids
  • The first video is an overview and outline of our reading and math program. You should be able to click on it's link and see it from home on you tube
  • More coming soon: how to assess a new child, using the abacus to practice addition and multiplication,
  • The document links explain in detail how we work with each child and record what they have completed. There are also examples of the documents we use to communicate with each other about how each child is doing and progressing - the reading primary assessment sheet and the tutor session notes sheet. Check them out if you are new or haven't visited for a while and want to get back up to speed.

Over the next few months, I hope to add the following to help you learn more about the PREP program and Neighborhood House:
  • Photographs of Neighborhood House.
  • A calendar of weekly events and the best days/times to teach
  • Photographs and descriptions of our resources for reading and math.
  • Ongoing updates of the wish list - the materials and skills we need to better serve our community. Let us know if you can help - send us an email: subject line - wish list - to nhky.tutoring@yahoo.com.

Welcome to Neighborhood House!

Hello everyone!

Thanks for visiting us at prepblog. Neighborhood House began in the 1890's as a community service site for primarily immigrant and working class families in the portland neighborhood. As times changed, many of the jobs on the river and in manufacturing migrated elsewhere, sending portland onto the shoals of hard economic times. Neighborhood House now aids area residents with food programs, daycare for working families, art programs, senior programs, and now, an afterschool tutoring program.

The Portland Reading Excellence Program (PREP) started in the fall of 2006 as a coordinated effort to improve the educational aspirations and performance of our younger members. Tutors generally visit one to four times per month and read and work math problems with several children per visit. Children arrive after school for the many services and shelter that Neighborhood House provides. We generally tutor from around 4:00pm until 6:30pm Monday through Thursday. We have a recurring information meeting for persons interested in learning more about PREP the first Monday of each month at Neighborhood House. Please join us if you want check us out in person.
